Nowadays, D-malic acid is extensively used in the food and beverage sector. It is used as a natural flavoring agent and preservative agent. It’s also used to bind the compounds in supplements and drugs and in certain cosmetic products. In 1785, the scientist Carl Wilhem Scheele discovered the malic acid in apple juice. Two years later, the scientist French chemist Antoine Lavoisier called it “acide malique,” which is French for malic acid. D-malic is one form of malic acid formed naturally in plants, but can’t be extracted in a cost-effective way.
